LimeRoad & V-Mart Merger
We began the conversation from knowing what's going on in the present phase of her entrepreneurial journey. When asked about her recent ventures, Suchi shared the significant milestone of LimeRoad's merger with V-Mart.
"The merger laid the groundwork for making LimeRoad truly omnichannel," she said, highlighting the opening of LimeRoad's first branded store in Hubli, Karnataka. The transition marks not just a new phase for LimeRoad, but also a personal pivot for Mukherjee as she prepares for her next entrepreneurial adventure. Though she was tight-lipped about the specifics of the merger, she made it clear that her journey in the startup world is far from over.
The State of Indian Entrepreneurship: Opportunities and Challenges
Reflecting on her journey as a serial entrepreneur, Mukherjee painted a vivid picture of the Indian market.
"India is such a large market. We all, as a country, now have the ambition of becoming 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047," she noted, emphasizing the immense potential and untapped opportunities in the nation.
However, she didn't shy away from pointing out the country's challenges, particularly in women's equality and the need for better living conditions in major cities.
"For all women entrepreneurs, and women with dreams, India cannot become 'Viksit Bharat' unless all of us come out and play out our dreams," she passionately stated, calling on women to seize the moment and pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions.
Personal Struggles and Societal Biases
Mukherjee candidly discussed the dual challenges faced by many women: personal responsibilities and societal biases.
"At a particular point in a woman's life, you will get into the sandwich zone," she explained, referring to the juggling act between young children, aging parents, and career demands. She recounted an early experience when a company registration official doubted her capabilities simply because she was a woman. "He said, 'Aap to videsh se aayi hain, yahan kuch nahi ho sakta.' There's still a little bit of that inherent bias," she shared, highlighting the additional hurdles women face in the entrepreneurial world.
Yet, Mukherjee's approach to these challenges is refreshingly straightforward: "Listen to everybody, but do what you think is right." She stressed the importance of perseverance and maintaining one's passion in the face of obstacles.
"Building businesses is hard. It's tough. So you better love what you're doing," she advised.
The Future of Fashion in India: Niches Waiting to Be Explored
With her extensive experience in the fashion industry, Mukherjee has a unique perspective on its future in India.
"India is so large and so diverse. If you look deep, there are so many crevices where you can make money, where you can build high-quality businesses," she said.
Mukherjee sees untapped potential in niche markets, such as women's denim, where fits and fabrics suited to India's hot and humid climate remain largely unaddressed. Her emphasis on the importance of the supply chain further underscores her belief that the industry has much room for innovation and improvement.
Importance of Team Building for Startups
As Mukherjee gears up for her next venture, she stressed the importance of having a solid team and making tough decisions swiftly.
"This is not a one-man show, one-woman show. If it's not feeling right, it's probably not right," she said, advising entrepreneurs to make decisions quickly, especially when it comes to team dynamics. "Time is money, and as an entrepreneur, that's the number one thing to remember."
Suchi Mukherjee's journey from LimeRoad to new ventures is not just about business success—it's about navigating personal challenges, societal expectations, and the relentless pursuit of one’s dreams. Her story is a call to action for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, to seize the opportunities that lie in India's vast market. With her passion, resilience, and strategic mindset, Mukherjee continues to inspire the entrepreneurial community, proving that with the right mindset and team, the sky's the limit.
