In a remarkable development, the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, a transformative initiative launched by the Central Government on September 17, has garnered an overwhelming response, with more than 21 lakh applications flooding in within the span of two-and-a-half months.

This data, sourced from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), underscores the significant demand for the scheme aimed at uplifting and enhancing the skills of artisans and craftspeople across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled the scheme with the objective of providing crucial support and advanced training to individuals in these traditional trades.

Vishwakarma Scheme: State Wise Performance

Breaking down the numbers, Karnataka emerged as the frontrunner with a staggering 6.28 lakh applications, closely followed by West Bengal at 4.04 lakh. Other states making substantial contributions include Assam (1.83 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (1.53 lakh), and Andhra Pradesh (1.21 lakh). In stark contrast, 15 states, including Haryana, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and several northeastern states, reported fewer than 10,000 applications each.

As of December 1, out of the 21.15 lakh applications received, a notable 43% (9.13 lakh) were from tailors (darzi), 22% (4.72 lakh) from masons (mistri), 9% (1.86 lakh) from carpenters (suthar), and 4% each from basket makers and barbers (naai). Surprisingly, 4013 applications were received for the seemingly ancient and redundant profession of an armourer, indicating a renewed demand, particularly for crafting movie costumes.

What Is Vishwakarma Yojana?

The Vishwakarma Scheme, a groundbreaking endeavor by the Indian government, has been earmarked for an initial allocation ranging between Rs 13,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore. The primary focus of the scheme is to infuse vitality into the traditional occupations of skilled artisans, such as goldsmiths, ironsmiths, washermen, hairdressers, and masons, who predominantly hail from the OBC community. This visionary initiative is poised to catalyze economic growth and empower a significant segment of the population whose craftsmanship has been a cornerstone of India's rich cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized, "For all our workers, artisans who mostly belong to the OBC community, we will launch the Vishwakarma Yojana on the occasion of the forthcoming Vishwakarma Diwas, where around Rs 15,000 crore would be provided to them." This timely boost is expected to breathe new life into these professions, enabling artisans to thrive in today's rapidly evolving economy.
