In a significant stride towards self-reliance, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared today that over 99% of mobile phones used in India are now locally manufactured, surpassing a whopping $44 billion in market value. Government initiatives like Make in India & Vocal for Local have emerged as a game-changer, fostering a thriving mobile manufacturing market within the country.
99.2% Mobile Phones Made in India
Minister Vaishnaw took a dig at opposition leaders who persist in the belief that mobile phones are primarily imported. He emphasized that a remarkable 99.2% of mobile phones used in India are now proudly 'Made in India,' showcasing the country's growing self-sufficiency in the tech sector.
“Met Mobile industry to review progress. Industry has grown 20 times in 9 years. 2014: 78% import dependent 2023: 99.2% of all mobiles sold in India are ‘Made In India,’” Ashwini Vaishanaw said.
Local Manufacturing of Phone Parts
Highlighting India's technological ascent, the Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister revealed that the nation is not merely assembling phones but is also producing various phone components locally. This marks a significant leap in the nation's tech capabilities, signifying a move up the global tech ladder.
Celebrating the accomplishments of the last 9.5 years of the present government, Minister Vaishnaw asserted that India has reached a level where export-led growth in electronics and products is feasible. The industry's every employee played a pivotal role in achieving this milestone, contributing to the country's economic progress.
Growing Smartphone User Base In India
With a current user base exceeding 931 million smartphone users, India is on track to surpass 1.1 billion users by 2025, growing at an impressive Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 22%. Statista predicts a smartphone penetration rate close to 71% in India by 2023, reflecting the widespread adoption of mobile technology.
'Make in India' Success Story
Under the 'Make in India' initiative, mobile phone shipments have crossed the 2-billion mark during 2014-2022, achieving a remarkable 23% CAGR. This success has propelled India to become the second-largest mobile phone-producing country globally. Internal demand, increasing digital literacy, and government initiatives have been key drivers of this growth.
Tech giant Apple is actively boosting iPhone production in India, aiming for a production value exceeding $40 billion within 4-5 years. In tandem, Google's announcement of Pixel smartphone manufacturing in India supports the country's aspirations as a global manufacturing hub. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are set to be the first locally manufactured devices, expected to roll out by 2024.
Government Initiatives For Local Manufacturing
The Indian government's initiatives like 'Make in India' and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) have been instrumental in promoting local manufacturing and value addition. These schemes aim to bolster domestic production, fostering self-sufficiency across various sectors.
