India's Electric Dream: Startups and MSMEs Steering the Wheel

India's ambition to become a global leader in electric mobility is gaining traction, propelled by the ingenuity of its vibrant startup ecosystem and the adaptability of its MSMEs. This was the resounding message at the "Viksit Bharat Conclave 2024: New Era of EV, Green-Tech & Digital Startups," where a new report titled "Powering Startups and MSMEs for an EV-Ready India" took center stage.

TICE presents some highlights from this report.

Launched by Sudhendu J. Sinha, Advisor for Infrastructure Connectivity & Electric Mobility, NITI Aayog, and Cmde Amit Rastogi (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director, National Research Development Corporation, the report, a joint effort by PHDCCI and OMI Foundation, provides a comprehensive analysis of India's evolving EV landscape.

"For the first time in 75 years since independence, India is making significant strides towards becoming a Viksit Bharat," stated Mr. Sinha during the launch. "The EV and Green-Tech sectors offer immense potential in driving this transformation. Additionally, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes are proving to be a game changer for India's EV startup ecosystem, fostering innovation and growth in this space.”

Innovation and Homegrown Solutions

The report highlights the remarkable innovation displayed by Indian EV startups. These companies are not just adopting existing technologies; they are pushing the boundaries with groundbreaking developments in battery technology, software solutions, and charging infrastructure. This homegrown innovation is critical for making EVs more affordable and accessible to the Indian masses.

Overcoming the Challenges

However, the journey towards an EV-powered India is not without its challenges. Startups and MSMEs face hurdles such as navigating complex regulations, securing funding, and building a robust charging infrastructure. The report acknowledges these challenges and offers recommendations for creating a more supportive ecosystem.

"Startups and MSMEs are at the heart of India’s electric mobility revolution," asserted Ms. Aishwarya Raman, Executive Director of OMI Foundation. "Through this report, we aim to provide a roadmap that will empower these businesses, ensuring India’s position as a global leader in sustainable transportation. To this end, a collaborative, inclusive ecosystem is vital to India’s EV transition."

Government Support and Policy Interventions

While praising the impact of government initiatives like the PLI scheme and FAME-II, the report calls for more targeted support for EV startups and MSMEs. This includes tailored schemes, tax benefits, and incentives to encourage investment and innovation.

"Green-Tech & EV Startups will play a critical role in Viksit Bharat by 2047," stated Mr. Salil Gupta, Co-Chair, Power Committee, PHDCCI. "Viksit Bharat, or Developed India, is not just a goal; it's a mission that encompasses our aspirations for a nation that is economically robust, environmentally conscious, and technologically advanced. In this vision, the role of EVs and green-tech cannot be overstated."

Skills, Inclusion, and a Collaborative Future

The report emphasizes the need for a skilled workforce and the importance of inclusivity in the EV industry. It also calls for a collaborative approach, bringing together government agencies, industry leaders, investors, and academia to drive sustainable growth in the sector.

"Our collective efforts must focus on creating a supportive ecosystem for startups and MSMEs to thrive," concluded Dr. Ranjeet Mehta, CEO & Secretary General, PHDCCI. "The insights from this report will help policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators build a sustainable and inclusive future for electric mobility in India.”

The "Viksit Bharat Conclave 2024" served as a vital platform for stakeholders to discuss these critical issues and chart a course for the future of electric mobility in India. The report, available online, is a valuable resource for anyone invested in the growth of this promising sector.
