Launched on 1st April 2019, the FAME India Phase II Scheme has been a driving force behind the rapid adoption of electric vehicles in the country. With a budgetary support of Rs. 10,000 crore, this ambitious scheme focuses on electrifying public and shared transportation. The primary goal is to incentivize the adoption of electric mobility by offering demand incentives for various categories of EVs.

Under the FAME India Phase II Scheme, the government aims to support the adoption of 7,090 electric buses, 5 lakh e-3 wheelers, 55,000 e-4 wheeler passenger cars, and 10 lakh e-2 wheelers. Additionally, the scheme prioritizes the development of charging infrastructure to address range anxiety concerns and boost EV adoption across India.

Milestone Achieved: Over 8.4 Lakh Electric Vehicles Sold

The FAME India Phase II Scheme has achieved a momentous milestone, with a staggering 8,47,578 electric vehicles sold by various manufacturers to consumers as of 28th July 2023. The total value of these EV sales amounts to approximately Rs. 4157.00 crore, a testament to the growing popularity of electric mobility in the country.

Breakdown of Electric Vehicle Sales

The electric vehicle sales can be categorized as follows:

1. Two-wheelers: Out of the total EV sales, an impressive 7,53,140 units were two-wheelers, highlighting the significant preference for electric scooters and motorcycles among Indian consumers.

2. Three-wheelers: Electric three-wheelers have also gained popularity, with 85,168 units sold, contributing to cleaner and greener last-mile transportation solutions.

3. Four-wheelers: Electric four-wheelers, including electric cars, have seen steady growth, with 9,270 units sold under the FAME India Phase II Scheme.

Powering Public Transportation: 6315 Electric Buses Sanctioned

In a bid to revolutionize public transportation, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has sanctioned a total of 6,315 electric buses to 65 cities, state transport undertakings (STUs), and state government entities for intracity operations. This move aims to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and create a more sustainable urban transport system.

State-wise Electric Vehicle Adoption

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' e-Vahan portal provides a comprehensive state-wise breakdown of registered electric vehicles across the country. As of the latest data available, a total of 27,44,019 electric vehicles have been registered.

Among the states, Andhra Pradesh emerges as the highest EV registered state with an impressive 66,500 electric vehicles on its roads. On the other hand, Arunachal Pradesh, the northeastern state, showcases its commitment to clean energy with 25 registered EVs. The national capital, Delhi, also showcases substantial EV adoption, boasting 2,29,305 electric vehicles.
