What if the next big technological breakthrough doesn't come from Silicon Valley but from the southern state of Tamil Nadu? Could India's deep tech revolution be brewing in Chennai? The recent iTNT Industry Conclave suggests it might just be.
Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, the state's Minister for IT&DS, set the stage ablaze with his vision for a Tamil Nadu that's not just innovating but leading the charge in deep tech.
With the state's bold new mantra, "Innovate in Tamil Nadu (IN2TN)," and the upcoming Tamil Nadu Deep Tech Policy, the excitement is palpable.
But what exactly is deep tech? How is Tamil Nadu fostering its growth? And could this be the key to unlocking the state's – and perhaps even India's – trillion-dollar economic aspirations? TICE gets the details for you about this story unfolding in Chennai.
IN2TN: More Than Just a Slogan
"Innovate in Tamil Nadu (IN2TN) is our new mantra," Dr. Rajan declared, emphasizing that it represents a strategic call to action.
It encapsulates the state's dedication to cultivating a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, vital components in realizing the Chief Minister's vision of propelling Tamil Nadu towards a trillion-dollar economy.
India's First Deep Tech Policy on the Horizon
To support this ambitious journey, the state is actively drafting the Tamil Nadu Deep Tech Policy, a pioneering initiative in the country. Dr. Rajan stressed the pivotal role industries can play in shaping the future of innovation in Tamil Nadu and urged industry partners to deepen their engagement with the iTNT Hub through strategic partnerships and CSR contributions.
Unlocking the Future: Celebrating Innovation
The conclave also served as a platform to recognize and reward groundbreaking ideas. Dr. Rajan presented cash prizes totaling Rs. 4.5 Lakh to the winners of the iTNT "Unlock The Future Innovation Challenge." This challenge attracted over 500 teams of startups, innovators, and aspirants from across the state's emerging and deep tech sectors.
The winners included Vyuhaa Med Data, a healthcare startup, for their AI & IoT solution for real-time data analysis and decision-making. Daijo, a sustainability startup, won for their resource consumption reduction solution, and Climatequant Tech, a climate tech startup, emerged victorious for their supply chain transparency and efficiency solution.
From Winning Solutions to Deep Tech Enterprises
Thiru Kumar Jayant, Additional Chief Secretary of the IT&DS Department, highlighted the state's commitment to nurturing these winning solutions into thriving deep tech enterprises. This focus on turning ideas into reality underscores Tamil Nadu's determination to create a fertile ground for innovation to flourish.
Tamil Nadu Deep Tech Policy: A Collaborative Effort
Earlier in the evening, a curtain-raiser roundtable on the "Tamil Nadu Deep Tech Policy" took place, chaired by Thiru Jayant and co-chaired by Ms. Vanitha Venugopal, CEO of iTNT Hub. The discussion saw active participation from industry experts and subject matter specialists from various deep tech sectors. The policy, announced by Dr. Rajan in June, is set to be anchored by iTNT Hub, marking a significant step forward for the state.
iTNT Hub: The Catalyst for Transformation
The Tamil Nadu Technology Hub (iTNT Hub) was established through a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, the Information Technology and Digital Services Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, and industry partners. Inaugurated by the Chief Minister in May 2023, the Hub is dedicated to building a first-of-its-kind Deep Tech Innovation Network. By leveraging the combined strengths of startups, innovators, researchers, incubators, academia, government, and international partners, iTNT Hub is poised to drive transformative global innovation.
With its focus on sectors like Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Space Tech, Robotics Healthcare, Cyber Security, Creative Tech, and High Value SaaS, the Hub is not only incubating and accelerating startups but also taking proactive steps to accelerate innovation and investment in these target sectors.
The Road Ahead: A Bright Future for Deep Tech in Tamil Nadu
The iTNT Industry Conclave and the upcoming Tamil Nadu Deep Tech Policy signify a new era for deep tech innovation in the state. With its focus on collaboration, support, and a conducive environment for growth, Tamil Nadu is well on its way to becoming a global leader in deep tech and a driving force behind India's trillion-dollar economy dream.
