Can a rapidly developing nation prioritize environmental responsibility alongside economic growth? Can the construction industry, often associated with resource depletion and pollution, become a champion of sustainability? India is answering these questions with a resounding "yes" during the World Green Building Week.
The country is not just participating in this global movement; it's actively demonstrating how innovative green building practices and ambitious net-zero carbon goals can pave the way for a sustainable future. From bustling cities to rural landscapes, India is showcasing a blueprint for responsible development, proving that a greener tomorrow is not just possible but within reach.
As the world grapples with the urgent need to address climate change, India is stepping up to the plate, showcasing its commitment to sustainable development. The nation is not merely participating in this global initiative; it's actively shaping the narrative of sustainable construction, demonstrating how a rapidly developing country can prioritize environmental responsibility alongside economic growth. From innovative green building practices to ambitious net-zero carbon goals, India is building a blueprint for a sustainable future, one brick at a time.
#BuildingTheTransition: India's Green Building Movement Gains Momentum
The Confederation of Indian Industry - Indian Green Building Council (CII-IGBC), the nation's leading authority on green building certification and associated services, is actively participating in this year's Green Building Week. The 2024 campaign, aptly themed #BuildingTheTransition, calls upon the building and construction industry to embrace a three-pronged approach for a resilient and carbon-neutral future: reduce, electrify, and adapt.
A Global Call to Action for a Sustainable Built Environment
This annual campaign enjoys the support of over 75 Green Building Councils (GBCs) and their partners. Together, they are hosting more than 100 events worldwide to showcase solutions for a resilient and decarbonized built environment to industry stakeholders. The campaign's core message revolves around three key principles:
- Reduce: Enhance energy efficiency and minimize energy consumption.
- Electrify: Transition essential functions to electricity and ensure electricity generation from low-carbon sources like renewables.
- Adapt: Ensure the built environment can withstand the impacts of climate change.
At the inauguration of the Green Building Week, Mr. B Thiagarajan, National Chairman of CII-IGBC, emphasized India's commitment to the cause.
He stated, "The Green Building Week is a global initiative by the World Green Building Council. The Indian Green Building Council is recommitting itself to Building the Transition along with all our stakeholders and partners – developers, builders, architects. Aligned with WorldGBC in its mission in transforming the building and construction sector together we are playing a constructive role in creating built environments which are sustainable and resilient to climate change.”
A Global Movement with a Local Impact
Now in its 16th year, the World Green Building Week is spearheaded by WorldGBC and its global network of GBCs, boasting over 46,000 members and international industry leaders. Their collective goal is to build momentum and drive the local action necessary for the well-being of both people and the planet. The GBC network, present in over 75 countries and covering 60% of the world's building stock, is uniquely positioned to catalyze change.
IGBC: Leading the Charge in India
The Indian Green Building Council, an integral part of the World Green Building Council, is one of the most dynamic councils globally. As part of the Green Building Week, IGBC is organizing a series of events to promote environmental sustainability in the construction and building sectors. These initiatives include a national webinar series highlighting climate change solutions, waste management sessions in partnership with Eastern Railways, and the launch of IGBC student chapters in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mysuru, and Bengaluru to instill environmental consciousness in young minds and encourage the fusion of traditional and modern architectural designs for a sustainable future.
A Holistic Approach to Sustainability
Mr. C Shekar Reddy, National Vice Chairman of the Indian Green Building Council, underscored the significance of the Green Building Week, stating, “The Green Building Week is a very important and relevant global movement which aims at promoting ways and means to build sustainable infrastructure and buildings which minimize their environmental impact and enhance the quality of life for their occupants. Through multiple initiatives, IGBC along with its partners is looking at responsible and sustainable development practices which balance human needs with environmental stewardship.”
IGBC's Multifaceted Approach
IGBC is at the forefront of encouraging innovation in building technologies, materials, and design practices that support net-zero goals. They actively promote research and development in sustainable building solutions and technologies. Additionally, they foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including industry experts, government bodies, and academic institutions, facilitating the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and solutions related to net-zero buildings.
Net Zero: India's Ambitious Goal
CII-IGBC's Mission on Net Zero envisions achieving 100% net-zero embodied carbon by 2050 for new buildings and infrastructure. They are also working towards making all buildings, including existing ones, net-zero operational carbon. Their Net Zero Carbon Rating System encourages the use of low-embodied carbon materials and technologies, on-site or off-site renewable energy sources, and adherence to a Whole Building Life Cycle Analysis. This rating system addresses projects in both the 'Design & Construction' and 'Operations' phases, enabling tailored strategies for minimizing or eliminating carbon emissions at different project stages.
The Net Zero Energy, Water, Waste, and Carbon rating systems offer an exceptional opportunity for the Navi Mumbai building sector to spearhead the adoption of Net Zero practices and contribute to India's transformation into a leading nation in achieving Net Zero by 2070.
India's active participation in the World Green Building Week underscores its unwavering commitment to sustainable development. Through the concerted efforts of organizations like CII-IGBC and the adoption of innovative practices, India is paving the way for a greener and more resilient future. As the world watches, India's green building revolution is poised to inspire and lead the global transition towards a sustainable built environment.
