Blazing a Space Trail

In a timely move, Chennai witnessed the launch of Vaanam, the nation’s first private space tech accelerator, aimed at fostering the space startup ecosystem with a spotlight on Tamil Nadu.

This launch comes as India’s space technology sector sees a surge in funding, receiving $126 million in 2023—up 7% from $118 million in 2022 and a remarkable 235% increase from $37.6 million in 2021, according to data intelligence platform Tracxn.

Despite a global slowdown in funding, the Indian space technology sector continues to trend upward, driven by substantial government support and significant innovations, making it an ideal time for such an initiative.

This pioneering initiative, spearheaded by entrepreneurs Hariharan Vedamurthy and Sameer Bharat Ram, was officially unveiled by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa in a grand event that saw the esteemed presence of former ISRO scientist, Nambi Narayanan.

Mentorship from a Space Legend

Under the mentorship of Padma Bhushan awardee Nambi Narayanan, Vaanam aims to be a transformative force in the Indian space sector. Narayanan, renowned for his contributions to ISRO, emphasized the need for private sector involvement to complement the efforts of governmental agencies.

"ISRO can’t take the entire load in the space race. We private players need to compete internationally, and for this, the government must step in to provide funds," said Narayanan. He also proposed the formation of an Asian Space Agency to financially support space programs and enhance trade relations among Asian countries.

Tamil Nadu’s Bold Vision: Thoothukudi Propellant Park

The accelerator’s launch is part of a broader vision for Tamil Nadu’s space industry. The state is developing a propellant park in Thoothukudi's Kulasekarapattinam, where India's second rocket launchpad is being constructed at a cost of 950 crore. Minister Rajaa highlighted the park's potential to attract space-related manufacturing and R&D firms to Tamil Nadu. "Accelerators are crucial when startups are seeking funding, and the state government is providing significant support to space tech, with backing from the union government," said Rajaa during a fireside chat with Narayanan.

Supporting Space Startups: Vaanam’s Mission

Vaanam is designed to accelerate the growth of space tech startups by providing them with commercial expertise and specialized tools. The accelerator aims to act as a springboard for early-stage businesses, helping them achieve product-market fit and scale their innovations. "There’s a wide gamut of use cases in the space tech sector, from mining satellite data to mining asteroids. In recent years, many startups have emerged to meet these demands, but there is a gap in commercializing these innovations," stated Co-Founder Hariharan Vedamurthy.

Inspiring the Next Generation: Space Clubs in Schools

Vaanam’s outreach efforts extend to educational institutions, with plans to establish ‘Space Clubs’ in schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu. These clubs will conduct workshops to inspire students and inculcate a passion for space exploration. "Vaanam will reach out to schools and colleges to create ‘Space Clubs’ to inculcate space thinking amongst students and young people," said Co-founder Sameer Bharat Ram.

Prominent Supporters: Industrialist and Actor on Board

The advisory board of Vaanam includes notable figures such as industrialist Ravi Mariwala and actor/director R Madhavan, bringing diverse perspectives and support to the initiative.

"We’ve been seeing many startups sprouting up catering to these demands, yet there’s a whitespace in a solid commercialization framework to bring these great demands to market," Vedamurthy emphasized.

Vaanam’s launch marks a significant milestone in India’s private space sector, setting the stage for Tamil Nadu to become a hub for space innovation. With strong government backing and mentorship from industry veterans, the accelerator is poised to drive significant advancements and place Indian startups on the global space tech map.

The space tech landscape in Tamil Nadu is set to soar, as Vaanam paves the way for a future filled with innovation and exploration.
