The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), have officially inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration and driving innovation in the Automotive and Electric Vehicle (EV) sectors. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of Heavy Industries, Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of the State of Uttarakhand (via video conference), and senior officials from both the Ministry and the State of Uttarakhand.

Innovation Boost: CoE and Industry Accelerator at IIT Roorkee

Representing IIT Roorkee, Prof. K.K Pant and Shri Vijay Mittal, JS MHI, signed the MoU, symbolising a joint effort to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) and an Industry Accelerator at IIT Roorkee. This initiative falls under the Scheme for Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector Phase II of MHI, reflecting a commitment to driving advanced initiatives that will shape the future of transportation.

With a total grant of ₹19.8745 Cr. from MHI and an additional ₹4.78 Cr. contributed by industry partners, the total project cost is ₹24.6645 Cr. This substantial financial backing aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry, supporting research, development, and implementation efforts that will transform conceptual ideas into tangible solutions.

Startups Join Forces with IIT-Roorkee for E-Mobility Revolution

Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey, speaking at the event, emphasised the role of the Capital Goods Scheme in advancing new technologies and fostering the integration of cutting-edge technologies within the manufacturing sector, promoting Atmanirbhar Bharat. He commended MHI's significant contribution to propelling India towards global export prominence and highlighted the collaborative efforts with Uttarakhand and IIT Roorkee in establishing the Industry Accelerator and Centre of Excellence. Dr. Pandey underscored the critical focus on fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

The Minister also lauded the signing of a MoU with IIT Roorkee as a pivotal step towards creating an ecosystem where startups can join forces to pioneer projects in electric vehicles, significantly contributing to the nation's self-reliance in the e-mobility sector.

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, expressed gratitude to MHI for approving projects under the Capital Goods Scheme in Uttarakhand, particularly benefiting the e-mobility sector. He praised IIT Roorkee for its potential to engage with startups and industries, highlighting the institution's commitment to addressing crucial projects and fostering a culture of research, development, and collaboration in alignment with the national goal of self-reliance in the mobility sector.
