Indians have an insatiable love for food, and it comes as no surprise that the food market in India is massive. To further fuel innovation and growth in this sector, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, in collaboration with Startup India and Invest India, has introduced the Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge. 

This initiative aims to encourage the generation of innovative ideas, tackle industry-specific challenges, and foster collaboration between startups and industry experts.

What is Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge? 

The primary objective of the Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge is to empower entrepreneurs to come up with groundbreaking and futuristic ideas in the food processing sector. Program Details:

The Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge welcomes startups that are recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in relevant sectors. The challenge is open to startups at different stages, including ideation stage startups, validation stage startups, early traction startups, and scaling stage startups.

What are the Eligibility Criteria to Participate in the Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge? 

To participate in the challenge, startups must be recognized by DPIIT in relevant sectors. 

The relevant sectors include analytics, advertising, architecture, interior design, AR/VR (Augmented + Virtual Reality), automotive, art and photography, animation, chemicals, computer vision, telecommunication and networking, construction, agriculture, aeronautics, aerospace and defense, AI, green technology, events, fashion, finance technology, enterprise software, food and beverages, design, dating/matrimonial, education, renewable energy technology, hardware, healthcare and life sciences, internet of things, IT services, human resources, marketing, nanotechnology, non-renewable energy, pets and animals, media and entertainment, retail, household services, professional and commercial services, sports, social impact, social network, textiles and apparel, Indic language startups, transportation and storage logistics, travel and tourism, security solutions, airport operations, real estate, other specialty retailers, safety, robotics, passenger experience, biotechnology, waste management, and toys and games.

What are the Themes and Problem Statements for the Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge?

The Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge focuses on the food processing sector and addresses key problem statements that require innovative solutions.

Problem Statement 1: Low-cost primary processing gadgets with capabilities to handle multiple millets

Startups participating in this challenge will tackle the development of low-cost primary processing gadgets capable of handling multiple millets. This problem statement aims to enhance the efficiency and affordability of processing techniques for millets, an essential food source in India.

Problem Statement 2: Technology for on-farm and on-shelf and rural-level safe long-term storage of millets

The challenge seeks innovative technological solutions for the on-farm and on-shelf storage of millets, ensuring their long-term safety in rural areas. Startups are encouraged to develop cost-effective and sustainable storage techniques to minimize losses and improve food security.

Problem Statement 3: Waste to wealth: Innovative concepts for utilization of food processing wastes

In this problem statement, startups will explore innovative concepts for utilizing food processing wastes. The challenge aims to promote sustainable practices by finding ways to convert food processing waste into valuable resources, such as biofuels or organic fertilizers.

What are the benefits of the Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge? 

The Food Processing Startup Grand Challenge offers both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to recognize and support the efforts of participating startups.

Fiscal Incentives:

Six deserving startups will receive cash prizes worth INR 3 lakh rupees each. This financial boost can provide startups with the necessary resources to further develop their ideas and scale their operations.

Non-Fiscal Incentives:

Startups will also have the opportunity to receive incubation or acceleration support through the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) worth INR 2.50 lakh each. This support can help startups gain access to valuable mentorship, resources, and infrastructure to accelerate their growth.

What is the Procedure Post Submission? 

Once the application period ends, the evaluation process will commence. The submitted proposals will undergo a thorough review to select the most promising startups. Those selected will receive further guidance and support to refine their ideas and take them to the next level.
