DRI, a vital raw material for steelmaking, is traditionally produced using natural gas or coal in a process that releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide. This new plant, however, will leverage advanced vertical shaft technology to utilize green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, to reduce iron ore into DRI. This process emits only water vapor, making it a truly clean and sustainable alternative.

Government Support and National Goals

The project has received strong backing from the Indian government, with 70% of the Rs 230 crore project cost funded by the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This substantial financial support underscores India's commitment to achieving its ambitious goals under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Launched in January 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production and utilization. The mission targets an annual production of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 and a cumulative reduction of at least 50 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions. This project aligns perfectly with these objectives, demonstrating the potential of green hydrogen to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like steel.
