The jobs that face the greatest risk of being eliminated as a result of the technological revolution accelerated by ChatGPT have been identified in a new study by OpenAI, Open Research, and the University of Pennsylvania.
The research, titled "GPTs are GPTs: An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of Big Language Models," delved extensively into the jobs that artificial intelligence may cause to disappear.
In line with the study, general-purpose technologies (GPTs) have the potential to have a substantial impact on a variety of jobs inside the US economy.
Each job's potential exposure to extensive language models is identified by the study. Exposure, in its simplest form, relates to whether employing a GPT or GPT-powered system can cut the time it takes people to complete tasks by at least 50%. A job's chances of being automated increases with its level of exposure.
What did the study suggest?
The study found that compared to lower-paying employment, higher-paying jobs are more likely to be automated.
A further finding of the study was that occupations that largely rely on scientific and analytical abilities are less likely to be automated. On the other hand, positions that demand writing and programming skills are more likely to be automated.
Occupations at higher risk of getting replaced?
The study's authors pointed out a number of occupations that are particularly vulnerable to automation, including those of web and digital interface designers, blockchain engineers, tax preparers, writers, and authors, among others.
Occupations at lower risk of getting replaced?
It's interesting to note that the researchers also listed 34 occupations whose exposure to GPT-powered models is substantially smaller, indicating only a very slight possibility that they may be impacted by LLMs.
The 34 positions on the list include occupations like those of athletes, chefs, mechanics, assistants, tapers, tire repairmen, etc.
This is not the first time OpenAI has given thought to the risk that its products could cause numerous people to lose their jobs. Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that ChatGPT would result in the loss of a large number of employment but emphasized that it will also generate a sizable number of new professions that are difficult to envisage today.
